ALFIE (Artificial Language For Insignificant Excess)

AI & Biodesign | Design Research | Speculative Futures

What started as a branding final project at school, turned into a little scientific experimentation on speculative futures.

ALFIE (Artificial Language For Insiginificant Excess) is an advanced intelligent system that re-manufactures agricultural waste through a more experimental approach while raising awareness of human consumption and food waste.

The project consisted of a design lab and a data-centric installation, which draws inspiration from technology, artificial intelligence and their ubiquitous presences in our society today and possibly in the near future.

Artefact 01
Research Compendium

A research compendium is compiled to showcase and document the research, documentation, and experimentation behind the project, featuring all the information regarding the artefacts and how they support each other as touchpoints.

The publication is differentiated based on the making processes and research behind the brand, compiling and serving as a foundation for the readers to understand more about the project.

Artefact 02
Real Time Data Installation

A public installation on key data of the amount of waste being thrown in Singapore based on the neighbourhoods surveyed. The data visualization is based on an approximated API of waste being thrown per a certain period of time.

Data Classification & Collation

Specific qualitative data of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Singapore were collected and was inputted into the computer to form an installation showcasing the amount of waste being thrown away. Different colour-ways were given to differentiate the various neighbourhoods.

Artefact 03
Biodesign Laboratory

The design lab is a medium for ALFIE to remanufacture waste to biomaterials, serving as one of the main touchpoints for this project from experimental transformation and research.

The material chosen for the physical outcomes of the artefact serves as an experience for the public through a more tactile experience and a way to raise the idea of how something often underlooked such as fruit and vegetable scraps can be transformed to something interesting and useful for our daily life neccesities.

Artefact 04
Digital Brand Website

A digital website is also created to support and depict information to the public on how severe the issues of agricultural waste is actually and aims to document the research digitally, while giving this research a brand presence.
